Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine has become a significant social upheaval and a powerful challenge for the entire Ukrainian society. Along with the issue of military defense of the country against the aggression of the Russian Federation, the issue of support and humanitarian assistance to the civilian population is also being raised.

In modern conditions the traditional top-down models of humanitarian response have recently given way to rather strong horizontal relations. Charity is being replaced by social solidarity and mutual aid, which mobilize society for society.

Objective: to discuss the results of the joint research of Groupe URD and Yaroslav Mudryi National Law University ‘Mutual aid in Kharkiv during the war’, to analyse the mechanisms of mutual aid in times of crisis, to understand how they are related to institutional measures to provide assistance, to formulate recommendations for responding before, during and after the crisis.
