Nishat Nishat

Nishat Nishat –  Legal Adviser to the ICRC’s Operations in Ukraine. Nishat is Australian, and completed her undergraduate degree in Law and Humanities at Macquarie University in Sydney, including an exchange term at Oxford University in the United Kingdom. In 2009 she moved to Geneva, Switzerland to undertake a LL.M. in International Humanitarian Law at the Geneva Academy of Humanitarian Law and Human Rights. She joined the ICRC in 2010 and has worked as a legal adviser and a protection delegate in Afghanistan, Philippines, South Sudan and at the ICRC Headquarters in Geneva.

She took up the position in Ukraine in February 2017. The International Humanitarian Law Department of the ICRC’s Ukrainian Delegation provides legal support to the organisation’s operations in the country, with a special expertise in Humanitarian Law. In this regard, the department engages with a range of actors including the armed actors, authorities, the academic community and civil society on the legal issues of concern to those affected by the conflict.
